Dragon Types

There are so many stories of dragons, and with each story is a slightly different species. They can be long creatures with snake like bodies and large heads, such as in the chinese legends. They can also be huge creatures with large bodies and wings that are larger than any other living creature such as the european dragons. Some dragons are an amalgamtion of animals we see in our daily lives and others have little in common with any other living creature.

The dragons diversity is perhaps a reason for why the creature and its relating stories have survived the ages. Many cultures have their own dragons, with different appearences and different personalities.

I am going to attempt to cover as many of the cultures as i can in this section. This is of course not an easy task and so if you feel something important is missing then by all means contact me via the form or the forum.

Chinese Dragons

The land of the East has some of the most varied and awe inspiring tales i have heard. Their culture seems obviously enriched by their mythology and much of their lives is governed by history and tradition. because of this the Chinese dragon is one of the most profound and creative dragons in the world.

Occidental Dragons

The Occidental, or Western, dragon is often portrayed as evil and destructive. Although in europe's history this is often the case, if you go far enough back and dig that bit deeper you will find this was not always so. The Western dragon, although always warlike has often been a known as a guardian to people.

Oriental Dragons

Note: This essay will be removed once the detailed Japanese dragon essay is complete. All of the Chinese dragons information is now duplicated in the Chinese Dragons essayThe Rich and varied tales of the majestic oriental dragon are fascinating. The dragons themselves are less varied than their western counterparts. In China they are benevolent creatures but fierce when angered. In Japan the dragons have a far more volotile temperment. In both cases the dragons play a large part in eastern culture.
